Roscolux

Rosco's premier range of filters, Roscolux, is manufactured in a unique technology to insure the longest possible life under hot theatrical lights. Three discrete layers are combined in a tri-extrusion process. By sealing the colored layer between two microscopically thin layers of clear film, dye migration is minimized and effective life is extended. Roscolux is currently the most widely used filter range in the world.

COLOR EFFECT FILTERS
Available in sheets of 20in. x 24in. (50cm x 61cm) or rolls of 24in. x 25ft. (61cm x 7.62m)

CALCOLOR
Calibrated color, by Rosco is a series of color effects lighting filters designed specifically to the spectral sensitivity of color film. The series includes the primary colors Blue, Green and Red, along with the secondary colors Yellow, Magenta and Cyan followed by Pink and Lavender. Each color is designed in four densities: 15, 30, 60 and 90, corresponding to the familiar 1/2, 1, 2 and 3 stop calibrations. In color photography, three light-sensitive emulsion layers separately record the individual blue, green and red components of the spectrum. CalColor filters adjust the transmission of these color components at the individual light source in a familiar and reliable manner. As a result, the cinematographer can exercise selective and predictable control over the image's coloration as rendered by the film.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Roscolux is comprised of two types of plastic. More than 65% of the line is made from co-extruded polycarbonate plastic. The remainder of the line is deep dyed polyester.

Ordinary color filter is manufactured by surface coating clear polyester plastic film. In essence, the color is painted onto the surface. This means that heat and physical abrasion can easily remove the dye, resulting in quick fading and scratching.

Extruder

Co-extruded polycarbonate, the majority of Roscolux is colored all the way through the plastic. Raw polycarbonate is combined with dye pellets in a powerful extruder. The heat and pressure of the extrusion process thoroughly combine the clear plastic and the dye resulting in a plastic that is body colored all the way through the film. To further insure the durability of the color, a very thin layer of clear polycarbonate is then applied to both sides of the colored film, trapping the color between and providing a protective barrier. The final film then is extremely resistant to color fading, more durable to the high heat of lighting fixtures and protected from minor scratches and abrasions.

Moreover, Rosco utilizes a select form of polycarbonate that is flame retardant so that Roscolux meets the most stringent U.S. and International standards for fire safety.

The balance of the Roscolux range is equally superior to surface coated plastics, In our deep-dyeing process, polyester film is subjected to a heated bath of dye stuff for controlled periods of time. The film actually absorbs the dye into its surface, in some cases penetrating all the way through to the middle of the plastic. This again results in a more heat stable and long lasting color filter.

Roscolux contains both plastics because not all dyes and plastics are compatible. For example Lux 47 is a filter that cannot currently be made in polycarbonate.

Thickness
Polycarbonate: 3 mils typical (3-5 mils in extremely dark colors)
Polyester: 1.42 or 2.5 mils depending on color

Temperature Limits
Polycarbonate:

  • Melting point 220º C
  • Softening point 160º C

Polyester:

  • Melting point 300º C
  • Softening point 125º C

The softening point is where the filter begins to show stress marks and breaks down. We prefer to use polycarbonate plastic because of its higher softening point.

DURABILITY
The life color filters depends on may variables: the color, the instrument and lamp used, the dimmer level a filter generally runs at, and the amount of time the light is running. For these reasons it is impossible to assign a "life" for each filter. However, some basic knowledge and experience can help with estimates. Dark Green and dark blue filters usually burn out the fastest because they absorb the most infrared energy. Absorbing the extra infrared energy causes the plastic to reach it's melting temperature faster. When darker filters are needed, try choosing filters that transmit high amounts of the 700 nm range. You can find this information by looking at the spectral energy distribution (S.E.D.) curve located in the swatchbook for each Roscolux color filter. Filters that transmit high levels at 700 nm may also transmit high levels in the infrared range above 700 nm.

To prolong the life of a color filter, align your ellipsoidal lamp to a flat field focus. (Get rid of the hot spot.) You can increase the distance between the lamp and the filter by using a top hat or barn door. In extreme cases, try Rosco Heat Shield or Thermashield to prolong the life of your filters.

Never use a plastic filter directly in front of an open faced lamp. This will nearly always cause premature failure because the heat is trapped and it has nowhere to go except to the plastic filter. Always allow a suitable air gap.
