| TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS |
| Roscolux is comprised of two types
of plastic. More than 65% of the line is made from co-extruded polycarbonate
plastic. The remainder of the line is deep dyed polyester.
Ordinary color filter is manufactured by surface coating clear polyester plastic film. In essence, the color is painted onto the surface. This means that heat and physical abrasion can easily remove the dye, resulting in quick fading and scratching.
Co-extruded polycarbonate, the majority of Roscolux is colored all the way through the plastic. Raw polycarbonate is combined with dye pellets in a powerful extruder. The heat and pressure of the extrusion process thoroughly combine the clear plastic and the dye resulting in a plastic that is body colored all the way through the film. To further insure the durability of the color, a very thin layer of clear polycarbonate is then applied to both sides of the colored film, trapping the color between and providing a protective barrier. The final film then is extremely resistant to color fading, more durable to the high heat of lighting fixtures and protected from minor scratches and abrasions. Moreover, Rosco utilizes a select form of polycarbonate that is flame retardant so that Roscolux meets the most stringent U.S. and International standards for fire safety. The balance of the Roscolux range is equally superior to surface coated plastics, In our deep-dyeing process, polyester film is subjected to a heated bath of dye stuff for controlled periods of time. The film actually absorbs the dye into its surface, in some cases penetrating all the way through to the middle of the plastic. This again results in a more heat stable and long lasting color filter. Roscolux contains both plastics because not all dyes and plastics are compatible. For example Lux 47 is a filter that cannot currently be made in polycarbonate.
Thickness
Temperature Limits
Polyester:
The softening point is where the filter begins to show stress marks and breaks down. We prefer to use polycarbonate plastic because of its higher softening point.
